1上主訓示梅瑟說： 1And the people marched from Haseroth, and pitched their tents in the desert of Pharan.
2「你要派遣一些人去窺探我要賜給以色列子民的客納罕地；每一宗族支派應派遣一人去，個個都應是他們中的領袖。」 2And there the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
3梅瑟就依照上主的命令，從帕蘭曠野派遣他們去了；這些人全是以色列子民的首領。 3Send men to view the land of Chanaan, which I will give to the children of Israel, one of every tribe, of the rulers.
4以下是他們的名字：勒烏本支派是匝雇爾的兒子沙慕亞； 4Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending from the desert of Pharan, principal men, whose names are these:
5西默盎支派是曷黎的兒子沙法特； 5Of the tribe of Ruben, Sammua the son of Zechur.
6猶大支派是耶孚乃的兒子加肋布； 6Of the tribe of Simeon, Saphat the son of Hurl.
7依撒加爾支派，是若瑟的兒子依卡耳； 7Of the tribe of Juda, Caleb the son of Jephone.
8厄弗辣因支派是農的兒子曷舍亞； 8Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.
9本雅明支派是辣富的兒子帕耳提； 9Of the tribe of Ephraim, Osee the son of Nun.
10則步隆支派是索狄的兒子加狄耳； 10Of the tribe of Benjamin, Phalti the son of Raphu.
11若瑟支派，即默納協支派是穌息的兒子加狄； 11Of the tribe of Zabulon, Geddiel the son of Sodi.
12丹支派是革瑪里的兒子阿米耳； 12Of the tribe of Joseph, of the sceptre of Manasses, Gaddi the son of Susi.
13阿協爾支派是米加耳的兒子色突爾； 13Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
14納斐塔里支派是沃斐息的兒子納赫彼； 14Of the tribe of Aser, Sthur the son of Michael.
15加得支派是瑪基的兒子革烏耳； 15Of the tribe of Nephtali, Nahabi the son of Vapsi.
16以上是梅瑟派去窺探那地方的人名；梅瑟給農的兒子曷舍亞起名叫若蘇厄。 16Of the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.
17當梅瑟派遣他們窺探客納罕地時，向他們說：「你們由此上乃革布去，然後上山區去， 17These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to view the land: and he called Osee the son of Nun, Josue.
18窺看那地方怎樣，看住在那地方的人民是強盛或是軟弱，是稀少或是眾多； 18And Moses sent them to view the land of Chanaan, and said to them: Go you up by the south side. And when you shall come to the mountains,
19他們住的地方是好，或是壞；他們居住的城鎮是不設防，或是設防的； 19View the land, of what sort it is: and the people that are the inhabitants thereof, whether they be strong or weak: few in number or many:
20有什麼土壤，是肥沃或是貧瘠；在那裡有沒有樹木。你們應勇敢，帶些那地方的果子來。」那時是葡萄初熟的時節。 20The land itself, whether it be good or bad: what manner of cities, walled or without walls:
21他們遂上去，窺探了那地方，從親曠野直到勒曷布，哈瑪特關口。 21The ground, fat or barren, woody or without trees. Be of good courage, and bring us of the fruits of the land. Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes are fit to be eaten.
22他們上到乃革布，來到了赫貝龍。在那裡有阿納克的後裔阿希曼、舍瑟和塔耳買。──赫貝龍城比埃及左罕城早建七年。 22And when they were gone up, they viewed the land from the desert of Sin, unto Rohob as you enter into Emath.
23他們一直來到厄市苛耳山谷，砍下了一枝只有一嘟嚕的葡萄，兩人用槓子抬著，又摘了些石榴和無花果。 23And they went up at the south side, and came to Hebron, where were Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai the sons of Enac. For Hebron was built seven years before Tanis the city of Egypt.
24人稱那地方為厄市苛耳山谷，因為以色列子民從那裡砍去了一嘟嚕葡萄。 24And going forward as far as the torrent of the cluster of grapes, they cut off a branch with its cluster of grapes, which two men carried upon a lever. They took also of the pomegranates and of the figs of that place:
25四十天後，他們由偵探的地方回來， 25Which was called Nehelescol, that is to say, the torrent of the cluster of grapes, because from thence the children of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes.
26到了帕蘭曠野的卡德士去見梅瑟、亞郎和以色列子民的全會眾，給他們和全會眾報告，叫他們看那地方的果子。 26And they that went to spy out the land returned after forty days, having gone round all the country,
27他們向梅瑟報告說：「我們到了你派遣我們去的那個地方，實在是流奶流蜜的地方；這是那地方的出產。 27And came to Moses and Aaron and to all the assembly of the children of Israel to the desert of Pharan, which is in Cades. And speaking to them and to all the multitude, they shewed them the fruits of the land:
28只是住在那地方的人強盛，城鎮堅固廣大，而且我們在那裡也見到了阿納克的後裔。 28And they related and said: We came into the land to which thou sentest us, which in very deed floweth with milk and honey as may be known by these fruits:
29阿瑪肋克人住在乃革布地方；赫特人、耶步斯人和阿摩黎人住在山區；客納罕人住在海濱和約但河沿岸一帶。」 29But it hath very strong inhabitants, and the cities are great and walled. We saw there the race of Enac.
30加肋布使百姓在梅瑟前鎮靜說：「我們儘管上去，必要佔領那地方。我們必能戰勝。」 30Amalec dwelleth in the south, the Hethite and the Jebusite and the Amorrhite in the mountains: but the Chanaanite abideth by the sea and near the streams of the Jordan.
31但是與他同去的人卻說：「我們不能前去攻打那民族，因為他們比我們強盛。」 31In the mean time Caleb, to still the murmuring of the people that rose against Moses, said: Let us go up and possess the land, for we shall be able to conquer it.
32於是他們在以色列子民中，對所偵探的地方散佈謠言說：「我們偵探所經過的地方，是個吞噬當地居民的地方；我們在那裡所見到的民族，都是高大的人。 32But the others, that had been with him, said: No, we are not able to go up to this people, because they are stronger than we.
33在那裡還見到了巨人，即巨人的後裔，阿納克的子孫；我們看自己好像是蚱蜢；在他們看來，我們也實在如此。」 33And they spoke ill of the land, which they had viewed, before the children of Israel, saying: The land which we have viewed, devoureth its inhabitants: the people, that we beheld, are of a tall stature.
34 34There we saw certain monsters of the sons of Enac, of the giant kind: in comparison of whom, we seemed like locusts.
13:1-16
十二支派中没有肋未支派的代表，因为肋未支派在该地没有承受产业权。
13:17-20
天主虽然吩咐以色列人去占领他许给他们先祖的地方（出23:20-23），可是天主的恩典要求人的合作，人要尽力去实行天主的命令。因此梅瑟遣发了侦探，去侦探那地的虚实。
13:21-23
亲旷野在乃革布以南；哈玛特是赫尔孟和黎巴嫩两山中的关口。乃革布指许地的极南端，哈玛特在极北端。赫贝龙见创13:18; 23:2；民1:10等处；左罕即埃及的京都塔尼斯；阿纳克为住在赫贝龙附近，和培肋舍特一带的巨人的後裔；阿希曼、舍瑟和塔耳买似乎是阿纳克族的支系，见苏15:13,14；民1:20；申2:10,11,21等处；厄市苛耳山谷即谓葡萄山谷。
13:26
帕兰与亲在地理上指一个大旷野：帕兰指其南部，亲指其北部；卡德士为亲旷野的要地，位於厄东和阿玛肋克之间。
13:27-33
加肋布和若苏厄因着勇敢和信心，蒙受了进入许地的恩典；其他的人都死於帕兰旷野。参见26:65; 32:11-14等处。
